In 2017, time and again, law makers across the United States debated if feminine hygiene products should be subject to a Luxury Tax. While we can't imagine these items being categorized as anything other than a product for basic hygiene for a natural bodily function and a source of great concern for both genders when these items are not available. Governor Scott agreed and abolished the "Tampon Tax" and beginning in January 2018, tampons, menstrual pads, and menstrual cups are no longer subject to the "luxury tax".
This debate brought to light the plight of Homeless and low-income women across the United states, and what resources they turned to for help. In addition to the struggle of staying clean and having the emotional stress of managing all that accompanies a period, being low on hygiene supplies can lead to health issues, like Toxic Shock Syndrome and infections.
Now, in addition to blankets, soap, and socks, we are frequently asked for menstrual pads and tampons. We give what we can, and often use our financial donations to buy these items in bulk. Women from across Tampa Bay have trekked to our Monday events at St. Peter Claver Church on 1203 N. Nebraska Avenue in Tampa to donate feminine hygiene products.
Women aren't the only ones who use menstrual pads. Men can also have issues that require them to have an absorption pad under their clothes. Infections, irritations, surgeries, and leakage are just a few reasons Homeless and low-income men may request these items from us.
